“One thing a man must have: either a naturally light disposition or a disposition lightened by art and knowledge.” - Friedrich Nietzsche. This quote holds truth in it to me, perhaps because if I could say that there is any one thing in this world, that makes sense to me, it is art. The nature of an artistic act, is that it will never be any greater or less valuable than the artists who commits it, in the eyes of the viewer. This idea has always attracted me to art, perhaps I have been using it to lighten my disposition my whole life.
My name is Jett Durbin, and I am garza’s newest graduate. I am the type of person who will talk if I have something to say, or keep quiet if I dont. You might have seen me drawing on my assignments, or reading about current events in class. I like working with my hands, learning new things, exceeding expectations, being around positive people, and seeing other people happy. Being inspired and helping others is important to me. My dream is to travel and see the world, collecting art, and touching others with my own art.
I am surely here due to the abundance of inspirations and influential people I have been lucky enough to have in my life, and the ample amounts of opportunities that have been placed before me. I have a family full of people I whom look up to, that extends well passed my blood relatives. And I have learned a lot about myself in the almost two years i've been at garza. This is because I was given the space I needed to learn on my own, while being able to work face to face with a teacher that is actually eager to help me when I need to, something could barely hope to find at austin high. I honestly believe that every teacher at garza wants each and every student to succeed, this really does make garza feel like a big family. There was a period where I didn't move as fast as i'd like to academically, but eventually I learned that nobody was going to make me do anything, I had to do it for myself, and I got back on track. Thanks to garza I feel more than ready to dive head first into the next phase of my life.
Now that im done with school, I am going to put all my effort toward working hard and finishing my apprenticeship learning to tattoo. Im sure its going to be difficult but I know that I am up for the challenge. I dont know where ill be, or what ill be doing in the next five years, a lot can change in that time. But I am sure that whatever im doing, wherever I am, i'll be doing art, and surrounding myself with positive people.
As much as I will miss all the positive people here, i'm off to continue to lighten my disposition through art and knowledge. If for any reason you happen to miss me, come and get tattooed by me at Southside Tattoo, located at 1313 South Congress.
